Current standings after the opening matches and the first completed Matchday 2 games are below:
Because the 2026 format sends the top two teams plus the eight best third-placed teams to the Round of 32, a second group game can be decisive. Teams that start with 0 or 1 point are often under the most pressure to get a result. (SB Nation)
Teams with the most to gain from Matchday 2
Group C: Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Scotland
This is arguably the most important group on Matchday 2.
- Brazil (1 point) play Haiti. Anything less than a win would leave the five-time champions in a dangerous position heading into a final match against Scotland. (https://brazil-2026.com/)
- Morocco (1 point) face Scotland. A win would put Morocco in command of qualification.
- Haiti (0 points) are almost in must-win territory against Brazil.
- Scotland (3 points) can virtually secure qualification with a win over Morocco. (Reddit)
Pressure ranking: Haiti > Brazil > Morocco > Scotland.
Group D: Turkey and Paraguay
The United States and Australia already have three points each, while Turkey and Paraguay have none.
- Turkey vs Paraguay is effectively an elimination match.
- The loser would finish Matchday 2 on zero points with one game left, making automatic qualification highly unlikely.
- Even the winner would still need something from the final round, but three points would revive their campaign. (New York Post)
Pressure ranking: Turkey = Paraguay.
Group E: Ecuador and Curacao
- Germany and Ivory Coast already have wins.
- Ecuador vs Curacao is a huge game because the winner moves back into contention.
- The loser would remain on zero points and be in severe danger of elimination.
Pressure ranking: Curacao slightly higher because of the heavy opening defeat to Germany and poor goal difference. (NBC Sports)
Group F: Netherlands, Japan, Tunisia
- Tunisia lost heavily to Sweden and badly need points against Japan.
- Netherlands vs Sweden is important because a Dutch defeat would leave them under pressure entering the final match.
- Japan can take a major step toward qualification with a win over Tunisia.
Pressure ranking: Tunisia > Netherlands > Japan. (NBC Sports)
Group I: Senegal and Iraq
- France and Norway won their openers.
- Senegal vs Norway is one of the biggest Matchday 2 fixtures.
- A Senegal defeat would leave the African side on zero points before facing Iraq.
- Iraq are also in danger after losing their opener and need a result against France.
Pressure ranking: Iraq > Senegal. (NBC Sports)
Group J: Algeria and Jordan
- Argentina and Austria both won.
- Jordan vs Algeria is another near-elimination game.
- The loser would be stuck on zero points with only one match remaining.
Pressure ranking: Jordan = Algeria. (NBC Sports)
